How MakePay works with Stripe Billing / Invoicing
This Stripe connector is an invoice accounting workflow. Customers pay through MakePay, and the confirmed amount is recorded against the original Stripe invoice as an out-of-band payment. The operation does not charge a saved Stripe payment method or create a Stripe payout.
Use invoices configured for manual collection: send_invoice, automatic advancement disabled, and no scheduled payment attempt. MakePay checks those settings before checkout and again before recording so the invoice is not simultaneously collected by an automatic billing flow.
Before you connect
- A live restricted Stripe key beginning rk_live_, with account, invoice and event read permissions and invoice write access when recording is enabled.
- An open live invoice using send_invoice, auto_advance=false and no scheduled payment attempt.
- A supported invoice currency and exact amount. Three-decimal accounting currencies are currently unsupported.
Set up Stripe Billing / Invoicing with MakePay
- 01
Create a restricted key
Create a dedicated restricted key in the intended Stripe account. Test keys and unrestricted secret keys are not accepted in this connector. Grant invoice writes only if you enable recording.
- 02
Confirm the billing account
Enter the key in Bookkeeping → Integrations → Stripe Billing / Invoicing, select Check API key and confirm the detected business and Stripe billing account.
- 03
Prepare manual collection invoices
Configure the original invoice in Stripe for send_invoice with automatic advancement off. Enable Accept and record MakePay invoice payments, sync and share the eligible invoice’s MakePay URL.
- 04
Check the out-of-band result
After confirmed settlement, MakePay submits the invoice payment request with paid_out_of_band=true. Recovery verifies the original request’s event evidence and the current invoice before considering the payment recorded.
What happens when a customer pays
Crypto settlement outside Stripe
Stripe’s out-of-band flag records money already received elsewhere. MakePay retains the original settlement evidence; Stripe assigns its own payment processing timestamp. This connector does not replace Stripe’s card acquiring or settlement system.
A paid balance needs supporting evidence
MakePay verifies the request-specific invoice event, customer, currency and exact applied amount. An invoice that is simply marked paid does not prove that this checkout was the cause. Concurrent credits or payments can require review.
Check these connection limits
- Draft, void, uncollectible, test-mode, Connect/on-behalf-of and account-configured customer contexts are excluded.
- Stripe retains events for a limited period. Delayed or incomplete request evidence can require manual review instead of another payment request.
- Automatic invoice creation, wallet expenses, receipt-file uploads and automatic document-link insertion are unavailable.
Setup resources
Follow the detailed connection guide and your software’s own account requirements. Configure merchant settlement before sharing a customer invoice.
